1950年抗美援朝战争打响。在淮水河畔的沈家大院里，以卖水谋生的梁大爷和邻居们正在为儿子梁刚去前线抗美援朝送行。 梁刚走后，大杂院的人在平静的生活里也慢慢冰释前嫌了众多的矛盾。一天，梁刚牺牲的消息搅动了大院的平静，为了不让梁家夫妇太过受打击，大家努力地隐瞒着....... ..。A film version of a play Fassbinder directed in Hamburg, Clare Booth Luce's "The Women". It gave Fassbinder an opportunity to indulge his passion for working with women - there are forty women in the play and no men.
