在二十世纪二十年代初期，Georges Laffont因经历可怕的堑壕战而精神深受折磨，于是他决定离开原来的生活，前往美国西部旅行，造访广袤的上沃尔特——这块土地属于迪奥福的公司。迪奥福是艺术家，也是第一次世界大战的幸存者。Georges Laffont利用迪奥福的才能，吸引许多镇上居民成为种植园的劳工，但他的这次旅途最终走入死胡同。随后他来到南特，寻找哥哥马塞尔。马塞尔因战争致残，和母亲生活在一起，自欧洲战争结束后，Georges Laffont就再没见过马塞尔。在手语老师海琳的帮助下，Georges Laffont慢慢治愈了战争带来的伤痛，也尝试治愈家庭的伤痛。。Robbins is sentenced to prison for the assassination of his general officer, a prison you leave only when you die.
