While the kids celebrate in the living room dressed up as Ninja Turtles, the adults discuss, flirt, smoke and drink in the kitchen.。三十年代初的北平，财政所二等科员老李为人诚实、腼腆而又充满幻想，收入虽然不多，但养家糊口尚不成问题。妻子吃苦耐劳十分贤惠、儿女聪明可爱，令他深感家庭幸福。但有一件事情一直让他心存几分遗憾，并常觉烦闷，就是身为大学毕业生的他所娶的媳妇却是一个没有多少文化、缺乏风度教养的乡下姑娘。两人除了过日子，很难有什么心灵上的沟通。老李认识了房东的儿媳妇马少奶奶，马少奶奶温柔娴静、知书答礼，但却遭到丈夫的遗弃，常常神色忧郁。老李对马少奶奶渐渐有种说不出的感觉。老李的妻子结识了吴太太和邱太太，二人均正在与丈夫闹离婚，经常灌输给老李妻子一些如何发现、避免丈夫生外心或是整治丈夫的经验，令老李苦不堪言。但没过多久，气焰嚣张的吴太太和邱太太却与丈夫和好，马少奶奶的丈夫也回到了家，这些变化使老李非常吃惊，惆怅之余，老李决定带着老婆孩子回到乡下。。
